Time for Pie

The top 3 mud pies are shown above.  Each class member voted on the BEST one.  The pie on the bottom was the winner.  It contained more sand than the others and remained stuck together.

Mud Pie Monday!

Everybody lined up to get their soil for their mud pie recipe.

Soils were mixed together.

Water was added and carefully incorporated.
(Waxed paper rips easily!)

Mud pies were shaped.

And...delivered to the drying table.  Tomorrow we will decide who has the BEST mud PIE!

Beaunification Day/Earth Day

1st and 2nd grade students volunteered today with the help of teachers, administration, BVU staff & BVU students to make meals for families in need.  Kids worked an assembly line to make rice bagged meals.  They will be distributed in Storm Lake, Sioux Rapids & Alta.

Come Take a Romp in the Swamp!

We are under construction in our room!  We have just completed the fabulous & exciting book Chomp by Carl Hiaasen.  It is about a pair of kids on a wild adventure through the Florida Everglades. There are some crazy characters complicating things for them along the way.  The book prompted great discussions about bullying & kindness to others-no matter what your first impression is of them.  The 2 main characters were independent thinking kids who showed how to make tough decisions and stick with your friends.  We are sad the book had to end...so we will continue to live it- in our own Everglades right in the corner of our room.  Stop by and visit!!  More pictures to come!

Settling Cups

Setting up the settling cups

And....22 hours later
Clay-Loam-Sand

Following our settling cups observations today, kids noticed that the particle size of the clay had greatly reduced.  We talked about uses for clay, and how water would be needed.  Storm Lake used to have a brick factory, using clay from our lake to make the bricks.  Joshua gave it a try!

Scientific Observations

We used our 5 senses to observe
3 different types of  soil today.

Shake, Rattle & Roll

One week,
shaking once a day,
in a plastic cup with water.
Sandstone

Slate

Pumice

So, what could a river do over
1 year to these rocks?
How about in 100 years?
