Live Webcast
Yesterday kids listened to a live webcast from Scholastic featuring Usher. He spoke about how reading opens your imagination & allows you to escape from reality. His main message to kids was to stay positive and set goals for themselves. He gave examples of how this worked in his own life. What an inspiring person to listen to. At the end of the webcast, he sang. Pretty exciting!

The Long Haul
I don't know who is more
excited-the kids-or me!?!
I know how I'll be spending the night, curled up with an obnoxiously orange book!

The Pumpkin Project!
We are going to collaborate online with children in other schools using the following website:
This morning we weighed our pumpkin:
240 ounces (thanks Twyla!)
Then we estimated the number of pumpkins seeds we thought we'd discover inside. My guess was 56. Boy was I wrong! Students all estimated in the 100's and were much closer.
We all took turns feeling the inside of the pumpkin and used great adjectives to describe: spidery, dry, silky.
Then we dug in!
Adjectives began to change the more we dug at the interior of the pumpkin.
Mushy, gushy, slick, stringy, wet!
Then as teams we split up all the seeds to count. Students decided the most efficient way to count was by using groups of ten. They made quick work of this and had totals in less than 3 minutes.
EFFICIENT STRATEGY!
Our GRAND TOTAL?
472 seeds!!
Next week we will share our totals on the website and begin to compare numbers with other students. We can't wait to collaborate!

Loopy Kids!
We were feeling kind of loopy this morning! Our class talked about efficiency and counting today. What the students discovered was when you use grouping, counting a collection is so much faster! It is especially easy if you use a counting method you are most comfortable with. Most kids agreed using 10's was the best method.

My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother read by Melissa Gilbert
Patricia Polacco's brother passed away yesterday. As she said on her Facebook page, "Richie let go of the grass today." We will listen to this great story about family today in honor all the rotten red-headed older brothers out there.

The Last Day...
Is there any day sweeter than the
last day of school?
Backpacks stuffed to bulging with papers, old crayons
& used glue sticks.
Smiles, giggles & tears.
I have loved every minute with this class...
true friends who have celebrated life's ups & downs with each other.
We said the phrase,
"I've got your back,"
to each other on those bad days,
which made the good days that much better!
Many gained tremendous amounts of confidence alongside friends encouraging them, patting them on the back and saying,
"Way to go!"
So I'll say good luck to the future class of 2024,
but NOT goodbye.
Stay close to each other.
Take this winning attitude, infectious love of learning
& friendship on to 3rd grade!
Be proud of yourselves, be sure of your decisions,
stand up for YOU!
Your friends have ALWAYS got your back & so does Ms. Langner!!
