Fighting over sugar water!

Yummy Goldfish & sugar water breakfast for the ants on this Monday morning.

Students finished their observations today by drawing detailed pictures and writing about what they see.  Many changes happened in the last week.  More and more tunnels appeared, food was eaten and sand was moved out of the farm and into the spiral stairs on the outside of each farm.

As observations were completed today, we combined ant farms by connecting them with clear tubes.  It is amazing to see them moving through the tubes to visit their neighbors!

Leading them to their destiny!

What an amazing group of kids!  We had many moments throughout the day today when we just stopped what we were doing an appreciated the moment.  How many 7 & 8 year old's can do that and truly appreciate nature and their surroundings?  We had our usual circle time in the middle of the prairie, most kids sharing how happy they were to just be there.  All of us agreed if we could, we would just have school there everyday.  We dreamed about what we could graph in math, what animals we could observe and what it would be like to be IN the prairie everyday.
As we hiked through the woods, we came upon a pioneer cemetery.  The students were all so quiet and respectful.  We paused to consider how life was different for the settlers in the 1870's.  As we left Celeste gave a sweet wave and told them goodbye.

There were many moments throughout the day like that sweet wave from Celeste.  I don't know who was behind me as I hiked up the big hill, but a boy was talking about his destiny.  Someone else shouted, "She's leading us to our destiny!"  with such feeling it brought tears to my eyes.  What amazing, thoughtful kids you have all trusted to me.  This is a special group.  Thank you parents for letting me have this time with them.  I feel pretty blessed.

Communities Cooperative Computer Time

Today students worked as cooperative pairs to research attributes of 3 types of communities.  They used non-fiction text and their background knowledge to fill in a graphic organizer.  Then pairs began to write sentences on our new Chromebooks!  Our final document will have sentences contributed by all kids.  It will help us write our final paragraphs about communities.

June

I am excited to see that a few kids have logged in to KidBlog and have been working on posts.  I do check! Each time you add a post, I get an email alert.  So, start blogging kiddos!!  Your blog will be available until school starts.  It is such a great way to talk about the books you are reading this summer.  Joe and Ben have been added to the blog too and (they have to) are blogging about what they read.  I am reading a REALLY long book about a couple of rowdy boys growing up on the east coast  of the United States about 50 years ago.  I am laughing all the time and I know that I'd be sharing the characters' crazy adventures with you in circle.  I hope that you are all enjoying the (finally) sunny days.  Remember to GET OUTSIDE and read under the trees.  The birds are going crazy in our backyard lately, so it is my favorite spot.  We have blackbirds, sparrows, bluejays, a male and female cardinal and wrens constantly visiting our bird feeders!
